Maternity & Parental Leave
Maternity leave, now often called parental or family leave, is the time a mother (or father) takes off from work for the birth or adoption of a child. If you are planning a maternity or parental leave there are many things to consider and do prior to and when applying for your maternity/parental benefits including:
- Determining your rights, responsibilities and benefits
- Making arrangements with your board.
- Applying for Employment Insurance (EI) Benefits
- Applying for Supplemental Unemployment Benefits (SUB Plan) if you are a birth mother only.
- Ensuring continuation of your other teacher group benefits and considering pension implications and/or purchasing credit for your leave period.
Prior to applying for maternity/parental leave, you are encouraged to contact the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation for advice and assistance on your options and obligations.
