Unit Writing Checklist
Teachers are invited to submit new material in order to keep the Teaching Materials Centre up-to-date and responsive to teachers' needs.
A letter claiming authorship and granting permission to place the item on our website must accompany contributions.
If copyright materials are used in the unit, the sources must be acknowledged. Please cite the source -- title, publisher and date of publication. New materials are reviewed, and if selected they may be edited for grammar and content.
Guidelines for Unit Submissions
Please include the following information in each unit submitted to the Centre:
Title Page:
- Title of unit
- Grade level(s)
- Subject area(s)
- Author's name(s)
Concept Map or Concept Grid:
- Provides an overview that highlights major activities pertaining to each curricular focus.
- Users can see at a glance the major components of the unit.
Table of Contents provided.
Objectives:
- Are referenced by page number to the specific curriculum guide(s).
- Describe in specific terms what students will know and be able to do as a result of completing the unit.
- Include all types: knowledge, skills, products, and attitudes.
- Are limited in number in order that they reflect an achievable number given the time frame of the unit.
- Include mention of the Common Essential Learnings included in the unit.
Instructional Strategies and Learning Activities:
- A variety of instructional strategies are used.
- The strategies and activities used provide a variety of activities that promote students' active engagement in learning.
- Activities include a variety of ways for students to represent their learning including written, oral and visual assignments.
- Suggestions are made for possible adaptations to environment, activities, resources, and assessment in order to respond to a variety of abilities and learning styles.
- Provision is made for resource-based learning by including web-based resources, print resources, audio-visual resources, human resources and community resources.
Equity and Diversity:
- Environment, resources, and strategies attend to issues of equity and diversity including:
- Aboriginal Content and Perspectives;
- Multicultural Education;
- Gender Equity;
- Other.
Assessment and Evaluation:
- Assessment tools are included that provide ongoing information on the achievement of lesson and unit objectives.
- Assessment tools are varied and may include: anecdotal records, performance tasks, portfolios, checklists, rubrics, self and peer assessments as well as tests and quizzes.
Alignment of Curricular Components:
- Objectives, instructional strategies, learning activities and assessment build upon and support each other.
- There is cohesion amongst all elements in the unit.
Bibliography:
- A complete bibliography of all resources is provided in APA Format.
- Copyright principles are adhered to -- the work of others is adapted and appropriately cited.
- No remuneration is paid for contributions but authorship is acknowledged on the title page. Materials will be made available free-of-charge on our web page.
