Related STF Policy - Teacher Success Project
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) has the legislated authority and responsibility to address matters that involve the professional competence of teacher members. In recent years, various developments have raised the need for a strategic, practical framework that would clarify the profession’s definitions and principles of teacher competence and, from a broader perspective, the profession’s understanding of “teacher success.” At the same time, it is important to identify the resources or other supports that teachers require to carry out their professional roles and responsibilities.
In response to these closely related needs, the provincial Executive established a committee of teacher members and Federation staff to guide the development of a suitable framework. The Committee completed its mandate in the spring of 2002 and the following principles and policies were approved at the Special Meeting of Council in October 2002: “Guiding Principles and Supports for Successful Teaching Practice”,· “Teacher Success” policy,· “Teacher Supervision and Evaluation” policy.
As one way to encourage teachers to apply these policy statements, the Committee also led the preparation (through the Saskatchewan Professional Development Unit) of Lessons from the Prism, a professional development resource. Copies were distributed to local presidents, staff representatives, and PD Chairs. Additional copies are available by contacting the STF office in Saskatoon.
