What We Do

Beliefs and Values

Guiding the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation’s work is the fundamental belief that teachers want to provide the best possible educational opportunities for Saskatchewan students. Teachers are firmly committed to the principles of lifelong learning, professional growth and the improvement of education. Teachers also believe that public and private sector institutions, as well as individual citizens, share responsibility to provide the resources that will support students’ learning opportunities and teachers’ work.

As the organization that represents and supports Saskatchewan teachers, the Federation takes an active, critical and constructive role to identify and strengthen these resources and contribute to the overall direction of the publicly funded education system. To this end, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation supports, nurtures and models leadership that embodies:

  • Respect in all relationships.
  • Service and stewardship to children and teachers.
  • Individual and collective empowerment.
  • Equity and social justice.

Governance

The purposes of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation are set out in The Teachers' Federation Act, 2006, and the bylaws of the organization. In working to accomplish its purposes, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation continuously seeks a balance between teacher autonomy and accountability. The principles, beliefs and goals of Saskatchewan teachers are expressed in Federation policies adopted by the STF Council on behalf of all Saskatchewan teachers.

Functions

As an organization representing teachers and duly constituted by legislation, the Federation carries out its purposes through three foundational functions: Social and Political Advocacy, Professional Stewardship and Responsibility, and Economic Services. The STF Strategic Plan articulates these major functions and is updated annually for consideration and approval by the provincial Executive.
