The Responsibilities of Council

The core responsibilities of Council are outlined in Sections 9 and 14 of The Teachers’ Federation Act, 2006. In addition, Council frequently engages in communications and political influencing functions that relate to its role as the voice of Saskatchewan teachers. Its responsibilities include:

  • enacting bylaws, in accordance with The Teachers’ Federation Act, 2006, that regulate and support the governance structure and processes of the STF;
  • adopting policies that guide the programs, actions and communications of the STF;
  • monitoring the financial status of the provincial organization;
  • monitoring STF pension plans and benefit plans for Saskatchewan teachers;
  • passing resolutions that direct the Federation to an action or position;
  • electing the members of STF disciplinary committees;
  • electing the members of the provincial Executive;
  • acting as a venue for communicating with members and the public on behalf of teachers; and
  • influencing the media, politicians, policy-makers, educational administrators and others on issues affecting teachers, children and education.
