Membership

Regular Members

Any person employed as a teacher in a school organized, continued or receiving or eligible to receive grants pursuant to The Education Act, 1995 must, as a condition of his or her employment, be a member of the Federation. STF members belong to both the provincial organization and one of the 26 local associations in the province. In addition to access to the many benefits, members also have a responsibility to support the Federation and take part in its activities and events.

Associate Members

Any teacher who possesses a valid teaching certificate may apply to become an associate member of the STF. Associate members generally include Band school teachers, substitute teachers who did not teach in the previous school year, SIAST instructors in the Adult Basic Education Program, or out-of-province teachers. Applications are subject to approval. Associate membership entitles the member to receive STF publications, access to the Stewart Resources Centre, and to member rates for professional development workshops, courses, seminars and conferences.

Education Students

Students registered in a teacher education program in Saskatchewan are members of the Federation. They are not charged a membership fee and have the same rights and responsibilities as associate members. Education students are represented at the Annual Meeting of Council and are guided by the three codes of Professional Competence, Professional Ethics and Collective Interests when they are interning or engaged in other field experiences in the school system.

Teachers Employed in First Nations Schools

The Federation may enter into an agreement with the education authority of any First Nation in Saskatchewan to provide membership to teachers employed in First Nation schools. The terms and conditions of membership are set out in each agreement as are the fees paid by each member.

Honorary Members

The provincial Executive may confer honorary membership on any person.
