STF President “Surprised” at the Government’s Funding Reversal

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

SASKATOON – This week, the Premier of Saskatchewan, Honorable Scott Moe, announced his government will cover the full cost of a new contract with members of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation. Details of this contract are expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks, once the arbitrator has delivered his final report.

The decision by the government to fund the full cost of the arbitration settlement is a reversal from the government’s previous position, articulated during Education Estimates in the Saskatchewan Legislature back in May.

On August 29, 2018, STF President Patrick Maze told the media that the government’s reversal was a “surprise,” but he welcomed the decision. According to Maze, “it’s nice to know that government is accepting their responsibility to fund education.”

Later that day, Maze also delivered a speech to the Saskatoon Teachers’ Association. He spoke of the arbitration process, plans for Re-Imagine Education and the need for teachers to speak with one united voice.

Highlights of that speech are available in the video below.
