Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation President Patrick Maze congratulated all candidates in the Regina by-election and urged everyone to consider public education issues when voting.

“Today a by-election was called in Regina Northeast with voting to take place on September 12,” Maze said. “This is an important democratic process and we honour those from all political parties who have stepped forward to sacrifice time and energy so they can be a part of this vital event.”

Maze encouraged everyone, but particularly teachers, to watch and evaluate the policies outlined by the various candidates, to see what they would mean for the future of public education for our children.

“Education is vital to the future of our province – it affects everything and everyone,” Maze said. “We should all be playing a role in making sure the future of education receives the attention that it deserves.”

Maze said the next provincial general election is not that far away – the fall of 2020.

He says the by-election, while in Regina, should be of interest to teachers across Saskatchewan.

“This could be an early indication of which way the political winds are blowing,” Maze said.

“We intend to be in touch with each candidate in the near future to give them an opportunity to outline their beliefs and direction for education.”
