Re-Opening Plans

On August 19, 2020 the STF provided direction to members regarding compensation for additional services.

On August 4, 2020 the Government of Saskatchewan released its Safe School Plan. You can watch the announcement on the Government of Saskatchewan’s Facebook page. The Response Planning Team has also released information on Forward Facing Instruction, Resumption of Learning and a sample of Staff COVID-19 Operational Procedures. Individual school divisions also released their government-approved plans and are available on the school division websites. Divisions developed plans based on the government’s Re-Open Saskatchewan Plan and Primary and Secondary Educational Institution Guidelines.

The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation issued a news release and held an online news conference in response to the announcement.

The Government of Saskatchewan is responsible for reopening schools. As a sector partner, the Federation has provided feedback and represented the voice of teachers in the planning process through the Education Sector Planning Response Team. The RPT is comprised of:

  • Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Executive Director Randy Schmaltz
  • Saskatchewan School Boards Association
  • Saskatchewan League of Educational Administrators, Directors and Superintendents
  • Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials
  • Ministry of Education

Planning Process

While the RPT has made recommendations and provided feedback, authority for the plans lies with government. The RPT made recommendations to the Ministry of Education based on public health guidelines. The Ministry and Chief Medical Health Officer created sector guidelines. Each school division was then tasked with creating detailed reopening plans, based on the guidelines provided by government. Divisions’ plans were reviewed by the RPT, Ministry and Chief Medical Health Officer

Teachers will continue to operate according to their legislated and contractual duties, rights and responsibilities. If you are asked to go beyond your duties and responsibilities, or if you are feeling pressured to act in contravention of your local or provincial contracts, we request you contact the Federation.

The Federation will continue to advocate for measures to help ensure teachers’ and students’ health and safety are protected as schools reopen in the fall.
