Audience: All School and their Communities in Saskatchewan

SDA is asking for Middle Years and High School one act plays by all playwrights (Youth and Adults) to enter.

Specifically, SDA is seeking the following:

Middle Years Play Submission Criteria

• One act plays running between 15 and 30 minutes (7 – 15 pages) in length.
• Plays have a majority of middle years characters, i.e., characters would be in grades 6 to 9.
• Plays are contemporary. Stories should take place today.
• Plays have simple staging requirements.
• SDA provides an option to produce a scene from the play entered as part of this competition.

High School Play Submission Criteria

• One act plays running 20 – 60 (10 – 30 pages) minutes in length.
• Plays have a majority of high school aged characters, i.e., grades 9 -12.
• Plays are contemporary.  Stories should take place today.
• Plays have simple staging requirements.
• SDA provides an option to produce a scene from the play entered as part of this competition.

Playwriting Competition Objectives:

1. to assist and encourage the development of playwriting.
2. to reflect the artistic expression of Saskatchewan’s diverse populations.
3. to enhance acting and writing skills.
4. to develop confidence through writing and stage performance.
5. to encourage creativity and help playwrights become more critical thinkers.
6. to help meet curricula goals of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education’s English Language Arts, Arts Education, Drama, and Theatre Arts.
7. to publish and acknowledge Saskatchewan playwrights through publication of their work.

Deadline for entering the competition is March 31, 2021.
