I stop teaching or my Plan membership ends before I retire

You may be able to receive your pension benefit (including voluntary contributions) if you end your STRP membership and you meet the following two conditions:

  1. You’re not eligible for retirement
  2. You’ve ended your teaching contract or stopped receiving benefits from the Teachers’ Long-Term Disability Plan

Your benefit will be given to you after a four-month waiting period that begins on the last day you:

  • taught,
  • were under contract, or
  • received long-term disability benefits.

The way you receive your pension benefit depends on your pension service:

If you have less than 10 months of service…

  • You are entitled to receive a refund of your contributions, plus interest.
  • You can transfer this amount to your RRSP or take it as a taxable lump sum payment.

If you have more than 10 months of service…

…and your benefits are not locked in

You can choose one of four options:

  1. Receive a refund that includes your contributions, plus interest.
  2. Leave your benefits in the Plan and start receiving your pension when you retire.
  3. Transfer the commuted value of your pension benefit to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), or another registered pension plan.
  4. Receive a refund of the amount determined under the 50 percent excess test (if any) and leave the remaining amount in the Plan.

…and your benefits are locked in

  1. Leave your benefits in the Plan and start receiving your pension when you retire.
  2. Transfer the commuted value of your pension benefit to a Locked-In Retirement Account (LIRA), or another registered pension plan.
  3. Receive a refund of the amount determined under the 50 percent excess test (if any) and leave the remaining amount in the Plan.

Note that options 3 and 4 are only available before the earliest date you are eligible to commence a monthly pension.

For more information about the options available to you when your Plan membership ends, contact the STRP

The small benefit provision If your monthly pension is below a certain amount, you can receive the total value of your benefit in cash, less applicable taxes.
