STF Reacts to the Speech From the Throne
Saskatchewan teachers acknowledge past commitments to public education that were noted in today’s throne speech; however, government failed to make any commitments to addressing the ongoing challenges. It did not include new investments or initiatives to address the key issues facing Saskatchewan students, parents and teachers.
While some progress has been made, the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation says sustained investment and a long-term commitment to public education will be needed to meet the growing demands facing Saskatchewan classrooms.
“We appreciate recent collaboration with the education sector and the progress that has been made towards restoring per-student funding. A strong and steady Saskatchewan requires sustainable, predictable and appropriate funding for public education. We look forward to seeing this priority reflected in the upcoming budget,” says STF President Samantha Becotte.
Despite recent progress, Saskatchewan schools continue to feel the effects of years of underfunding. The STF’s $1,483 campaign highlighted that inflation-adjusted per-student funding has declined by $1,483 between the 2015-16 and 2025-26 school years. The Federation continues to emphasize the important role that well-resourced, safe and caring school environments play in recruiting and retaining teachers in light of the current and growing teacher shortage.
The speech also highlighted investments in school infrastructure. Teachers welcome new school construction but note that strong public schools depend on more than buildings alone – students also need access to the staffing, supports and resources that make learning possible.
“Saskatchewan students need ongoing commitments backed by sustained investment and a clear plan to address the challenges facing today’s classrooms,” says Becotte.
