The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation is inviting applications for an independent professional with specialized knowledge of pension and benefits to fill a vacancy on the STF Pension and Benefits Board of Directors. The Board meets approximately four to five times per year; operating on a July 1 – June 30 fiscal year.

The Board plays a vital role in the trusteeship of the pension and benefit plans and is comprised of six individuals who are active STF members and two independent professionals with specialized knowledge in the area of pension and benefits.

The Board’s primary responsibilities are to:

  • Respond to and provide timely information, advice and recommendations regarding any matters that the STF Executive, as trustee for the pension and benefit plans, directs to the Board or requires related to its fiduciary responsibilities including:
    • Ensuring financial performance is consistent with benefit, funding and risk policies for the Plans.
    • Monitoring and evaluating the Plans to ensure they are in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, bylaws and policies including Federation and Plan policies.
    • Monitoring and evaluating trends and developments that may affect the Plans.
    • Any other matter referred to the Board by the Executive.
  • Attend to other board duties, such as (but not limited to):
    • Policy development.
    • Engaging in planning and risk management.
    • Monitoring of financial position of each pension and benefit plan.
    • Recommending/approving changes to plan design and/or contribution rates for the various plans when necessary.

Along with a strong sense of ethics, integrity, and outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, the successful candidate will have extensive knowledge related pensions and benefits. Diversity of age and gender, cultural heritage and geographic distribution are also considered within the context of the required skills and attributes.

As referenced in Clause 12.3.2 of the 2019-2023 Provincial Collective Bargaining Agreement, a teacher acting as an elected or appointed member of a committee of the Federation who attends a meeting called by the Federation, shall be granted leave and shall suffer no loss of salary and benefits during the course of an academic year for any days required to fulfil the duties of that office.

The Federation aims to engage as many members as possible in organizational operations. Preference will be given to those who do not currently hold other positions in office, committees or boards; however, members may apply for as many openings as desired.
