Rally for Public Education Frequently Asked Questions
Abstract:
When/Where is the Rally for Public Education?
- On the front steps of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2023.
What is the Rally for Public Education?
- The rally is being organized by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation to give voice to growing concerns about cuts to public education and the stressful impact this is having on our teachers and the problems these cuts are creating when it comes to delivering high-quality education to our students in under-resourced school environments.
Who should attend this rally?
- Anyone who is interested in maintaining high-quality publicly funded public education. We believe that this should be everyone in our province – students, parents, grandparents, business owners, concerned citizens and teachers. Investment in education is closely linked to future economic growth. A prosperous and sustainable Saskatchewan depends on a well-educated population.
What messages are teachers sending by organizing this rally?
- We have concerns about education funding in our province and we feel the government is not listening. Enrolment is growing; the number of teachers is falling. Students in need of intensive supports are up 38 percent. Saskatchewan has fallen from first place in national per-student funding to sixth place. Our students deserve better. Our province has a $1 billion surplus. Some of that money should go to increased investments in education.
What is this rally NOT about?
- This year, Saskatchewan teachers will begin negotiations on a new provincewide collective agreement, with the old agreement set to expire in August. This rally is NOT about those negotiations. This rally is about fixing many years of neglect in funding the services needed to support our students.
