Saskatchewan Special Support Program

May 7, 2025

The Special Support Program is an income-tested program that helps eligible Saskatchewan residents with their drug costs. A deductible is established based on total family income and a copayment is calculated based on total family income and total family drug costs. Coverage is determined for a calendar year. Teachers must sign up if they are sent a letter from Green Shield Canada asking them to do so.

Members will be notified by GSC when $1,000 in prescription drug expenses has been accumulated advising them to apply for the SSP with instructions on what to do when they receive their letter from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health. Drug claims will be reimbursed up to $1,500 and then suspended until such time as GSC receives the information from the member. Once in place, the member will be able to submit any receipts that were paid out of pocket.

Once they apply, applicants will receive a letter from the Ministry of Health advising them of their deductible and/or a copayment on their prescription drugs for each calendar year. Once the member and/or family unit meets the deductible, the portion will be paid by the Saskatchewan Drug Plan, and the balance will be paid by GSC under the terms of coverage.

Residents who have a federal program such as NIHB and Veteran Affairs are not eligible to apply for the SSP. They will still be asked to apply and need to contact GSC to let them know they are under a federal plan. They can contact our office as well and we can provide the information to GSC.

Information and application forms can be obtained from any pharmacy or by calling the Saskatchewan Drug Plan at 306-787-3317 or 1-800-667-7581.
