Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements 

You automatically receive Teachers’ Long-Term Disability Plan coverage if you are under 65 and:

  • Hold a continuing, replacement or temporary contract with a Saskatchewan board of education, Conseil scolaire or Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre.
  • Teach at an independent or historical high school as an STF member.
  • Work directly for the STF.
  • A member of the League of Educational Administrators, Directors, and Superintendents.
  • Work 30 or more hours weekly for LEADS with a valid Ministry of Education teaching certificate.

Substitute teachers aren’t eligible for coverage under the Plan.

When Coverage Starts

Protection begins on your contract’s first day if you are actively working, or on the day you return to active service.

Coverage Eligibility ends when you begin receiving a pension from any of the following:

  • Saskatchewan Teachers’ Retirement Plan.
  • Saskatchewan Teachers’ Superannuation Plan.
  • Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Employees’ Pension Plan.
  • Municipal Employees’ Pension Plan.

Premiums

As of July 1, 2025 premiums equal to 0.5 percent of salary are deducted from your pay by your employing school board.

You’re not required to pay premiums after you reach 64 years of age. However, you will continue to be a member of the Plan, if otherwise eligible.

As members pay the full premiums required to provide this disability insurance coverage, any benefits received are tax-free.
